Rutherford, Polk, and Henderson Democratic Parties call on Governor Easley to save Chimney Rock Park

The Executive Boards of Rutherford, Polk, and Henderson County Democratic Parties are formally asking Governor Easley to save Chimney Rock Park.  Governor Easley and the General Assembly have demonstrated their concern for the natural resources of North Carolina on many occasions including their support for the North Carolina Clean Smokestacks Act and the Dupont Forest.

Chimney Rock Park is a unique treasure that should be preserved for all generations of North Carolinians.  North Carolina is one of the top 10 states in growth and with the pressures of development increasing in Western North Carolina everyday, it is critical that the natural resources that sustain our air and water be preserved.  Citizens in WNC were extremely disappointed that the state’s offer of $20 million for the park was turned down by the owners.  However, we realize that it is early in the negotiation process and we urge Governor Easley to use all his powers and influence to bring this matter to a successful resolution for the citizens of North Carolina.

Chimney Rock Park located in Rutherford County adjoins Polk and Henderson.  Keith Price, Chair of Rutherford County said, “Speaking for the Democrats of one of our states most blessed yet economically deprived counties, we sincerely thank Governor Easley for all that he has done to preserve Hickory Nut Gorge/Chimney Rock for the public trust forever.  His help obtaining unprecedented appropriations to this point have been essential.  We are however in a crisis mode much like that when Crowder’s Mountain was to be ground down for its mineral resources and now, through meaningful swift State action, it is a crown jewel in our state park system.  Chimney Rock Park stands at this very same point and requires immediate CEO to CEO dialogue unfettered while both parties are so minded to do the right thing.”  (Contact:  pkp917@hotmail.com)

Margaret Johnson, Chair of the Polk County Democratic Party stressed that Polk County is firmly behind their neighbors in this effort to save Chimney Rock Park.  “This park is an important economic factor in our community and attracts tourist dollars and jobs.  So whatever our state government can do to preserve this asset will be a vital investment in our future.”  (Contact: mandmj4@alltel.net)

Eva Ritchey, Chair of the Henderson County Democratic Party agrees, “Generations within our community have visited and enjoyed Chimney Rock Park.  Once sold and divided, it will be impossible to reestablish.  Please, Governor Easley, save it.”
